On the Job Training with The Blocks
Foundation Knowledge
Block one is all about getting to know dogs on a physiological level. Students will explore canine culture, basic care of dogs, understand their life cycles, instincts and behaviours. We also look at first aid, introduce basic grooming tools and concepts, and important WHS for the industry. Students can complete this Block prior to any practical training at their workplace, or alongside it. It's also a valuable resource for Front of House staff who need to grasp the fundamentals of grooming language and practices.
Bathing, Brushing, Basics
In Block 2, students will deepen their understanding of dog grooming tools, their use on particular coat types, and maintenance. Students explore shampoos, baths and dryers and the unique techniques to use them, and will be guided through 12 bathing and drying tutorials across the different coat types. This Block is best started right after Block 1, and suitable for bathers and groomers assistants. We strongly recommend completing Block 1 as a prerequisite.
From Student to Stylist
Block 3, Pet Stylist, is a comprehensive guide to pet grooming. It covers groomer specific workplace health and safety, including room setup, ergonomics for large dogs, and first aid principles. The course includes specialized theory and tutorials for full grooms on mixed breeds and 19 pure breeds commonly seen in the salon. Additionally, it addresses special care grooming cases like matted dogs, puppies, and seniors/geriatrics.
Putting it all together
Block 4 enhances your staff’s theoretical knowledge of dog grooming and supports their hands-on learning on the job. Covering advanced grooming challenges and 'difficult' dogs in detail, popular breed-specific techniques and higher end mixed breed grooms, the step-by-step tutorials and detailed study materials make learning seamless, helping your team grow professionally and enhance your salon's reputation for quality. By building on the foundational Blocks, this course ensures your staff are continually developing, enabling them to meet industry standards and exceed client expectations.
Advancing Skills of Senior Dog Groomers
Building on Blocks 1 through 4, Block 5 equips your senior staff with skills in leadership, canine psychology, and advanced breed-specific grooming and techniques. This theoretical training, combined with in-depth tutorials, enhances their ability to manage, lead, and perform sophisticated grooming tasks, helping your salon offer high-quality services like hand stripping and Asian fusion, and fostering long-term professional growth. It's also a great course to help a staff member preparing for their Masters!

What are some examples of how I can use this subscription?
1. New Bather: You've hired a bather who's enthusiastic but lacks formal training. Blocks 1 and 2 are ideal to build her foundational skills.
2. Junior Groomer: You've got a junior groomer with solid skills but no time to guide them further. Blocks 4 and 5 can help them grow independently and sharpen their expertise.
3. Front Desk Staff: A new receptionist with animal experience but little grooming knowledge has joined. Block 1 will introduce them to grooming terminology and give them valuable insights into the industry.
4. New Business Owner: If you've just taken over a grooming business and aren't a groomer yourself, you may feel uncertain about the team's skill level and safety practices. Consider starting the whole team on Block 1. Bathers can then move on to Block 2, junior groomers to Blocks 2, and 3, and senior staff can advance to Block 4 or 5.

Are certificates issued?
Yes, certificates are issued to successful students. The theoretical assessments are rigorous, and successful students receive a Theoretical Qualification certificate from igroomschool for each Block they complete. Australian students receive a printed certificate, while international students receive a digital version.
Is there any practical training or assessment involved?
Not for the Theory Blocks. These Blocks are here to support practical learning on the job.
What materials and resources will students need?
To complete the online theory blocks, students will need a reliable internet connection to access the course materials, including video tutorials and interactive lessons. A computer, tablet, or smartphone is required for accessing the platform. While learning practical skills on the job, students are encouraged to use downloadable resources, such as e-books, checklists, and study guides, to reinforce their understanding. It is also helpful to have access to grooming tools for hands-on practice and real-world application of the theory.
How long does each course last?
The maximum amount of time the Blocks are available is as follows:
